Blooming interesting article – cost of flowers

I just finished reading the most incredible article  “Bloom or Bust – is Africa’s flower industry first victim if euro crisis?” in African Business Magazine. It is so well written, and so informative that I had to share some of it with you. I have already discussed the price of flowers in the recent post (which you can read here) , but this article explains the floricultural process (soil to vase) in depth.

I took a liberty of sharing a small portion of the article with you:

“The soil-to-vase value chain for the flower industry is extremely time-sensitive and vulnerable to physical conditions. The processes from post-harvest to retail must take place as quickly as possible to ensure the freshness of flowers are preserved. However, care must also be taken to ensure that flowers are sorted and inspected adequately, kept in cold conditions and well packaged to minimise damage…

Pre-Marital Counselling – what’s it about?

Many couples who are getting married consider pre-marital counselling. However, many couples are not religious and do not have an option of attending pre-marital counseling program offered at the religious institutions, whilst a psychologist from a private practice may be financially inaccessible to many couples.  PREPARE/ENRICH programme has been used extensively by various religious organizations, Social Workers and Psychologists in private practice and the good news is that is available through trained counsellors at a far more affordable rates.

Building a successful marriage takes time and starts before a couple get married. It then requires constant attention and steadfast commitment. Understanding the expectations of both partners and how behavior affects the relationship is essential to building a firm foundation.

PREPARE/ENRICH is a customised couple assessment completed by the couple that identifies a couple’s strength and growth areas. It is one of the most widely used programs for premarital counseling and premarital education. It is also used for marriage counseling, marriage enrichment, and dating couples considering engagement. Based on a couple’s assessment results, a trained counselor provides 4-8 feedback sessions in which the counselor helps the couple discuss and understand their results as they are taught proven relationship skills.

The goals of the Prepare/Enrich Programme:

  • Exploring strengths and growth areas
  • Improving communication skills
  • Resolving conflict
  • Exploring family-of-origin issues
  • Preparing budgets and financial plans
  • Developing personal, couple and family goals.

The programme usually involves 4-8 counselling/coaching sessions of approximately one hour each.

Wedding Budget Matters – why a smaller wedding may not necessary cost less

Many wedding publications and trend forecasts tend to give a bride a false impression that having a smaller weddings will drastically reduce the cost of your wedding. This is not necessary the case and here are a two simple reasons:

1. Your venue often charges a flat venue hire fee for the day of the wedding. Many venues have a prescribed minimum amount you need to spend with them in order to have your wedding there – this amount includes venue hire, and catering. Therefore a number of guests becomes irrelevant.

2. Wedding suppliers charge an hourly rate for their services. A photographer charges for 8-10 hour of shooting on the day of your wedding, and your DJ will charge you for the number of hours he/she plays at your wedding.

The way to save money on your intimate wedding:

1. Consider a wedding day during off-season months May-September

2. Consider having your wedding on a weekday (even Friday rates are often better than Saturday rates)

Inside The Splendid Studio

Toady is first day back at work for majority of South Africans! Welcome back and may 2012 be a prosperous year for all of you!

A creative mind needs stillness to gain clarity, as clarity of mind is vital for new and exciting designs. Over the holidays, I took time to relax and reflect. I feel so refreshed and excited about everything that 2012 has in store for me as a planner and a designer, my company and most importantly for all my amazing clients.

“Business is many things, the least of which is a balance sheet. It is a fluid, ever changing, living space, sometimes falling to crumbled lumps. The soul of a business is a curious alchemy of needs, desires, greed and gratifications mixed together with selflessness, sacrifices and personal contributions far beyond material rewards” (Harold Green, International Telephone & Telegraph Company, 1910)

This quote inspired me. During the ‘down time’ The Splendid Studio went through a metamorphosis and with the above quote in mind I am proud to present my creative space:
