2011Writing Wedding Thank You Notes
Thank You cards/notes are a big part of wedding etiquette.Your first task as a married couple is to thank your guests for sharing your wedding day with you, and for their generous gifts. Of course once the wedding high has left and you might start feeling incredibly overwhelmed by the task at hand- writing out 60-200 personalised notes is hardly anyone’s idea of fun, but it has to be done and here are some tips on how you can make the process more manageable.
1. Keep your final guest list saved
2. Write out the list of all gifts received, and match that gift to the guest (or a couple/family).
3. You can write one Thank You note to the couple or a family
4. Buy all the necessary writing materials -pens, notepad or Thank You Cards. You can purchase Thank You cards at CNA, or you can consider ordering personalised family stationery from Macaroon if your budget permits. Most wedding stationers will give you an option of printing your Thank You cards along with your wedding stationery.
Many couples use a wedding photograph of themselves, or a group shot of the wedding, as their Thank You card.
5. Set aside an hour in the evening to write the cards, share this task with your husband
6. The wording and the style of the Thank You notes should be appropriate to your wedding. If you had a fancy affair with the reception rivaling that of Duchess of Cambridge then your Thank You notes will have to be written on a formal card, in black ink, sealed in a matching envelope. If you had a casual wedding with country chic, shabby chic and quirky wedding theme then you can write a personal note on a beautiful paper to your guests.
7. You will need to personalise your notes and refer to the gift received. Here are some great examples from The Knot: Sample wedding thank you note for a cash gift: “Dear Aunt Sue and Uncle Tom, Thank you so much for your generous gift. Lila and I are saving for a new home and thanks to you, we’ll be shopping for our dream house very soon. Again, many thanks for thinking of us and for sharing our special day. Love, Derek and Lila”.
Sample thank-you note for a gift chosen from your bridal registry: “Dear Elizabeth and Albert, Thank you so much for the crystal wine goblets. We now have a complete set! Derek and I are looking forward to your next visit, when we can enjoy a drink together. Thank you again for thinking of us at this special time in our lives. Warmest regards, Lila and Derek”.
Sample thank-you note for a wedding gift you really didn’t like: “Dear Winona and Leif, Thank you for the fluorescent lava lamps. You are both so thoughtful! Every time we look at them, we will think of you and this special time in our lives. Again, many thanks for sharing our joy. Fondly, Lila and Derek”.
And please do not forget your wedding suppliers, they too need to be thanked too. Trust me, it is the most incredible experience receiving an email from a happy client thanking for a job well done.
